Toy Fox Terriers - History

Toy Fox Terriers are typically American dogs. First the English Fox Terrier was adopted by American farmers and hunters for practical purposes. In the end of the 19th century the selection of the smaller dogs began in order to hunt foxes. The small Terriers worked all day on the farmers' yards catching the rodents and protecting the hens. Some dogs could kill over 50 rodents a day. Sometimes Toy Fox Terriers were kept inside as toys, but could hear an intruder to the chicken yard even playing with children.

At that time the Toy Fox Terrier was an ideal choice for the traveling entertainer. He was easy to carry, feed and care, agile and smart to perform any trick, and besides an excellent watchdog! Up to nowadays the Toy Fox Terrier is called "feist dog".

In the middle of the 20th century great efforts were made to reduce the size of the Toy Fox Terrier by cross breeding with Toy Manchesters and Chihuahuas.

This little dog has lived since the 15th century among people because he is physically and mentally sound, happy in lap or field, intelligent and practical. Now Toy Fox Terriers are totally bonded to people, loving, gentle lap dogs with endless energy. Some Toy Fox Terriers assist handicapped people and prove to be excellent hearing dogs for the deaf.
